As a rule of thumb, you should plan on installing at least 80% of the pool surface area in solar heating. You should also consider heat losses. The gain in temperature from a solar, or other type of heater, can easily be lost overnight if the pool is not well insulated. This includes the material beneath the pool, the sides and a pool cover.

Most people expect a temperature rise of about 10 degrees C but higher gains are easily possible. To achieve the temperature rise required we need to consider the direction that the heater faces, the pool insulation, and the pool location and other pool parameters.
