All the materials that are used in the construction of your home or business absorb and transfer Heat. 80% - 95 % of this heat is transferred, from the warmer side to the cooler side by one or more of the following ways.
- CONDUCTION:
Conduction is direct heat flow through matter (molecular motion). Heat is always conducted from warm to cold never from cold to warm.
- CONVECTION is the transfer of heat within a gas or liquid.
- RADIATION is the transmission of electromagnetic rays through space.
R-value
An insulation rating mechanism developed to standardise the quality rating of insulation. Called R-value, this rating is based on a laboratory measurement, the R-value, which reflects a material’s ability to stop or slow heat transfer.
Take the R-value of the insulation and multiply it by the amount or thickness of the material. So insulation with an R-factor of 1.2 per cm which is 12.5 cm thick has an R-value of 15.
Reccomended Insulation Ratings
- Above Ceiling (R3.4)
- Under roof with reflective airspace (R2.7)
- Under roof no/little reflective airspace (R2.5)
- Wall - brick/veneer (R1.8)
- Under floor (R1.8)
Our recommended ratings maximise the benefits that insulation provides and are above the minimum requirements.
Note that the R-value of some common insulation materials actually reduce when the temperature falls.
